When you register your domain name it is analogous to
going to a car dealership and purchasing a vehicle. Your domain name
is your vehicle to being on the Internet.
Many people leave the process of registering their domain
name to the web company they hired, and they assume that the domain
will be registered in their own name. Often we see this is not the
case.
"Web" companies generally, for
malicious reasons, laziness, or wanting to have a hold on you and your
business or web presence, will put the domain registration information
in the "web" company's name!
When you buy a car from a dealership, they would never
allow you to register that car in their name, or allow you to drive
off the lot with any of the information in their name.
Why? Obviously the car insurance companies would have
a problem with that! Unfortunately there isn't an insurance company
that will monitor your domain name, or ensure that when you purchase
a domain name that you will be the registered the owner of that name.
This is a common and unfortunate occurrence that we see
weekly, and is a widespread problem in our industry. Fortunately, we
at CMS firmly insist, and ensure, that our client’s domain names are
always in their name and no one else's. It is effectively your insurance
policy that your internet assets will always belong to you and only
you.
Just as important, you must obtain and keep your domain
login information with whatever registrar your domain name is registered
with in a safe and accessible place. All you need is your user name
and password to always control your name-that is the key to your car.
And, of course, insist that you have access to your web content even
if web companies tell you it is too complicated for you to understand.
So, always ask your web company for your "FTP login information.”
You never have to ask at CMS, and you will always understand. That
is our promise to our clients.
